Behind the Cauldron: How Our Resin Art is Made at Trashmagick Alchemy
At Trashmagick Alchemy, every resin art piece is more than just a pretty object—it’s a potion in solid form, a tangible manifestation of alchemy, creativity, and chaos wrangled into beauty.
Whether it’s a glittering skull, a spell-ready candle holder, or a heat-sensitive rolling tray that changes color with your fingertips, the process behind these pieces is anything but casual. Here’s a peek behind the scenes into what actually goes into conjuring our resin creations.
The Ritual of Precision: Measurements Matter
Like any good spell, resin work starts with precise measurement. We use a two-part epoxy resin formula that must be mixed exactly right—usually at a 1:1 ratio by volume or sometimes by weight, depending on the formula. Too much of one part or the other, and the piece won’t cure properly. It’s sticky. It’s tragic. It’s a waste of magic.

Stirring the Cauldron: Mixing & Timing
Once we’ve measured out the components, the mixing begins. We stir slowly but thoroughly to avoid air bubbles while still ensuring a perfect bond. (Bubble traps are for demons, not resin.) The pot life—the amount of time we have before the resin begins to harden—varies depending on ambient temperature, humidity, and moon phase. Okay, not the moon (we think), but definitely the environment.
Adding the Magic: Colorants & Powders
Next comes the aesthetic spellwork. We use a variety of pigments, dyes, and color-shifting mica powders to create effects ranging from shimmering galaxy swirls to earthy bone-like finishes. For certain pieces, we brush powdered mica directly into the molds before the pour, which gives the outer surface of the piece a luminous, enchanted finish once it’s cured.
The Pour: Casting with Care
Once mixed and infused with color, the resin is poured into silicone molds. This is where we slow down and breathe—literally and metaphysically. A careful pour avoids overflow, uneven layers, or air pockets that could ruin the final piece. Sometimes we pour in layers, letting each one set slightly to add embedded elements, glitter, or visual depth.

The Waiting Game: Curing with Patience
Now, we wait. And wait. And wait. Depending on the resin type and the complexity of the piece, curing can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. Yes, seventy-two. That’s up to three days where we just have to leave it alone and hope the resin gods are feeling benevolent. We don’t demold early—it’s like pulling cookies out of the oven raw. Patience is part of the spell.
The Final Reveal: Popping It Free
When the piece is fully cured, we carefully demold it. This is our favorite part—like opening a mystery box. Each item is sanded and finished by hand if needed, sometimes polished or coated again for extra durability or shine.

The Alchemy Twist: Color-Changing Resin
Here’s where we truly stand out: we’re one of the only shops around that offers temperature-activated color-changing resin art. Yes, really. When you touch our trays or light a candle in one of our holders, the colors shift like a living spell. It’s a little bit science, a little bit sorcery, and a whole lot of WOW.
